‘Jada Gem, you gave me a fright!’ Granny Jinks said with a chuckle. ‘Tutoring done already?’

Jada shrugged. ‘Err, kind of… Our tutor got called away.’ She raised an eyebrow, looking at the tangled lump of wool in Granny Jinks’s hands. There were loose threads sticking out at random, and Jada wondered if it was supposed to look that lumpy. ‘What are you making?’ she asked.

Granny Jinks settled her glasses back on her nose and peered at the tangled mess. ‘I have absolutely no idea… but I’ve started, so I’ll finish!’ she said in a determined voice.

‘I was thinking…’ Jada began, watching her granny stabbing her hook a little too determinedly. ‘There’s quite a cool-looking class I saw a poster for – it’s happening just down the hallway. Please could I go and take a look?’

‘Hmm?’ Granny Jinks said distractedly, her fingers flying as she wound the wool around her crochet hook haphazardly. She looked up quickly and nodded. ‘Yes, yes, Jada, my dear, but then come straight back.’

Jada slipped out of the room, waving hello at Granny Jinks’s favourite librarian, Maria, who had come to help Mrs Whittaker look after the maths kids. Then Jada was down the hallway, trying to figure out where the magic auditions were taking place. She spotted a tall, skinny man in a top hat and tails disappear into a room to the right.

A-ha! Jada thought. She rushed after him, and pushed the door open a crack. Peering inside, Jada saw people milling around, waving wands, shuffling cards and stroking white rabbits that poked out of hats. This is it! Jada thought, her excitement building. The auditions!

Jada grinned as she spotted Tilda sitting a little way from the door, tongue clamped between her teeth in concentration as she practised a card trick. There’s only one way to find out if I can get Granny Jinks on the list to audition, Jada thought. I’ve got to ask. Granny always said, ‘If you don’t ask, you won’t get and if you don’t try you’ll never know.’ Taking a deep breath, Jada stepped inside.
